D. Alexandre da Silva Pedrosa Guimarães(1772-1789)

Bishop Alexandre da Silva Pedrosa Guimarães was appointed Bishop of Macao in 1772.  He took his office in Macao in 1774.  He was not too friendly with the Jesuit missionaries and had written to Emperor Kin Long (Qian Long) of the Ching (Qing) Dynasty to defame the Jesuits.  In 1778 he demanded the Macao government to expel the French missionaries from the territory but did not succeed.  In 1780, he was summoned to report on his work in Portugal and had not returned to Macao ever since.  He resigned in 1782, was approved in 1789 and later he died in Portugal.
